Austin is my hometown. You might want to try the famous smoked sausages of the area. They're a sort of German - Mexican - turned Texan hybrid for which this central part of Texas is also kinda famous. If so, head out to Elgin, TX. It's about 20 minutes east of Austin. It has a definite Old Texas feel, meaning, it is really nothing more than a wide wide main street with a bunch of old brick buildings lining it. It's not cute. It's not quaint. It's just kinda there, a spareness that is reflected in the smokiness of the fat sausages. I can't remember the name of the place in Elgin, unfortunately, but any local at any gasa station will tell you and direct you over to the place. I want to say it is someone's name, like Vick's or something.

County Line, a chain, for straight-up BBQ is good, if not especially creative. I think any of the really famous places for good BBQ are too far from Austin and hard to get to and a little far, like Cotton's. Still, ask around. Austinites, especially those who work in the downtown capital land, should have some recs!

Most of the Tex Mex places are about the same, to be honest. If possible look for ones which are not big or fancy and serve their Ice Tea (unsweetened Ice Tea is the national drink of Texas) in well-worn red plastic see-though tall cups, the kind that would bounce a few times if they dropped to the floor. In Tex-Mex fashion, ask for your tea with a lime, not a lemon, and avoid sugaring it. Damn good.

For simple 'Austin' kind of American fare, just head to one of the several funky Magnolia Cafes, a true local institution. See the wide variety of locals and cultures. You'll quickly understand why Austin always votes Democrat by as much as a two to one margin!
