notebook. Do you want everything, i.e. good graphics with 15" screen, light weight, reasonable battery life (2+ hr) before recharge, wireless network, good performance...
I am known to be a cheapskate regarding PCs, as you can always buy a cheaper one two years from now for 20-30% less and for a better machine that you have to pay today.
Have you considered eMachines ? They have a notebook for less than $1,200 and it sold out quickly when it came out. Take a look at their website at http://www.e4me.com. If where you live has BestBuy stores, you may just go in and take a look.
Alienware and Voodoo are both good machines but you do pay for the look and design of these things. If you want to have a good notebook that also reflect your fashion sense, by all means get one. As always, when you go the non-mainstream brand, make sure the technical support level is up to what you need.
Let us know what you end up with.
