I think the GM bean counters looked at this equation when figuring out what to do with the new 9-3:
- hatchback 9000 - sales of 'N' units
- replacement 9-5 - (no hatch, but a wagon) - sales of 2x'N' units
So, for the 9-3, use the same equation. Throw away the hatch, make a sedan and wagon, double sales. It may already be working.
Remember that the Saab and Chevy are in totally different markets. A hatch in the luxury market was considered too useful and proletariat and detracted from the car's 'status'. (I miss it too, but then I am one of the enlightened few). A hatch in the mass-market may make the Chevy a winner, however.
