You don't need more that 150ft-lbs.. sure the axle nut mnay call for a little more, so torque it up to 150 and then lean on it a little more with a breaker bar - that's what I did and the wheel hasn't fallen off yet. I think that the real problem with doing things w/o a torque wrench is that people regularly OVER torque bolts on their cars - the vast majority of bolts on your car are 12-14mm head and require only 15-25 ft-lbs. I'm guessing that If you tried to do this by hand you'd way overdo it. The engine block may be cast iron, but do you really want to break off a bolt in the block and then have to remove it? (did this with clutch slave on a 9000 and the oil pump on a 900)

Be sure to get a torque wrench that has a warranty and offers free calibration. I believe craftsman and span-on do this. The $25 wrenches sold at harbour freight certainly do not. If your servious about it you'll also wanty to pick up one of the wrenches for which the torque setting is dialed in by rotating the handle - the ones with the needle on the handle really suck.

Also be sure to dial the torque wrennch down to zero when you're finished with it for the day - storing it dialed up to 90 ft-lbs deforms the spring inside the wrench and makes it goi out of calibration faster.
