I test drove the Nissan Altima 3.5SE with leather before purchasing a Saab. It was amazing how crummy the leather felt. Not only was it paper thin, the attention to detail just wasn't there. The stitching was inconsistent and their was very little leather aroma even though it was new.
As for Toyota topping the leather quality survey, I haven't been impressed with the quality of leather they put in their Camry. Surely they are alluding to their Lexus line of cars.
On the BMW comment, I totally agree. A guy I know with a "leatherette" 325i tells everyone it's leather. He doesn't mind if anyone challenges him. His answer to me was that the leatherette looks and feels better than the leather that is standard in the 330i.
