I bought a 1994 Mercedes Station Wagon with 76k miles on it. It seemed to be in fairly good condition. Like you I bought it from a long distance away so it was harder to get it checked out by an independent mechanic.
It was advertised with "clean carfax". Turned out to have been in three major accidents. Fortunately the frame was OK - but clearly it was on it's second set of sheet metal on the front, and the rear had some body work done also. The exhaust system was completely shot - would not even pass inspection and had to be replaced from the cat back. There was a bad oil leak which turned out to be the timing case seal. Most of the suspension bushings were shot, as were the motor mounts. The driveshaft flex disk was broken. The car needed a major tuneup, during which it was discovered that the power steering fluid filter was missing and quite a few of the other filters appeared to never have been changed. All these items were fixed by a local specialist at a cost of nearly $6000 (paid 13,600 for the car, which was lower than I had seen anywhere else). I suspect that Mega Auto Sales is better at SAABs. The only warranty item I pressed them on was the exhaust system and they agreed that they would patch it and make it pass if that was necessary. I decided not to drive back to New York for that.
I make it sound pretty bad but the bottom line is this was an average deal - comparable cars around Boston sell for over $18k and they still need work too.
Sorry for the rant.
