The layout of a transmission under the engine would, if put in the the other way, lead to a very long wheelbase and a much heavier car (do to the need to extend the structure over a longer distance). It would result in a larger, more cumbersome turning circle, not a treat in Europe (notwithstanding the Citroens of the day, which did exactly that). As originally designed, the water pump was not belt driven, power steering was not included, and a/c was an afterthought, so all the belt needed to turn was the alternator. Then dropping the nose for styling and aerodynamics would add even more length.
According to "Saab, the First 40 Years" a transverse front drive was investigated as well. I think the relative rarety of transverse front drive in those days stopped that idea. Longitudinal drive transmissions and axle designs were common and easy to adopt without a huge development program, while transverse transmission and axle components were rare at the time. MacPhearson Struts, for making more engine compartment width, were also relatively rare in larger cars at the time.
