It is really too bad. I think it is more perception than anything. Here's an example... my Dad had a 1971 Dodge Polara, he drove it for 290K miles... original engine and transmission. He never did any work on it himself, brought it to Sears to get the oil changed "every so often". Never any problems.
Then, when the seats finally gave way, he bought a Honda Accord. He said "I heard that they are reliable". Traded it for an Acura. A smart buy in his book. The neighbors think he is doing well (perception) even though his debt level would make my blood pressure go up 30 points.
The fact that the big 3 have a hard time holding onto the car market is largely a perception of their product rather than reality. All those Buick owners who wanted something better were enticed by a lexus/acura/mercedes, not a cadillac. People want something new and exciting, not just a rehash of an old design. But the big 3 have just be rehashing old designs for years, and building trucks instead.
