The industry standard program for digital recording has a free version.
Protools is rapidly becoming what most recording studios are now using.

It is easy to use and has many nice features. I do a lot of home recording and currently have an interesting long distance band going on(keyboard player is in Iowa, Guitar, Bass and Voaclist in Boston, drummer(Me) in ATL)
We use Protools Free to burn our tracks then send it on to the next bandmember. Once person does not have a computer set up for it so he uses a four track recording and sends it to another band member to input. It is flawless and records very well.

I know, more information than you wanted, but just know that Protools is a great program and easy to use, and FREE.
