Bob M,
Being born and raised in the SF Bay Area, I am a bit biased but I still say it is worth it. Our weather can't be beat, and we are a very diverse mix of people in a small area. Home prices have stabilized but I believe the median is still the highest in the country at over $530K. Depending where you decide to live in the Bay Area, there are good starter homes in the $350K range in Morgan Hill and Tracy. Funny you ask about mountain and road biking. I do both. I used to race mountain bikes. You may not realize but the Marin County north of San Francisco is considered the birth place of mountain biking. There are many and I mean many mountain trails throughout the Bay Area. As a member of the local road biking club, it depends on the area you ride. I live near the South Bay and have not experienced any problems while riding. Marin County officials on the other hand do not like roadies or MTBers because we slow down their street traffic and destroy the environment. Other than Marin County, the rest of the Bay Area hosts numerous charity rides that attract thousands of people riding through many cities. Hope this information helps.
