wel, a lot is based on trust.

I have bought and sold many cars over the internet, sold one car on ebay, the guy flew in, I picked him up, and he drove it home to Ohio from NJ, and this was a 1974 triumph tr6....I have bought cars sight unseen, and usually when then arrive I've been satisfied.

anyway.

payment, accept cashiers checks, money orders, any type of certified funds.

if the buyer wants to drive the car home that day, you must be certain they have legitimate certified funds (unlike the scams we hear about here, with bogus cashier's checks)....and don't forget the old standby, cash....also wire transfers work.

in terms of registration, when you get full payment you should hand over the title, not before, not after. if you get a deposit, you can grant a testdrive without you riding along...if they just want a test drive, and you are unsure of the buyer, either take their car keys, or ride along with them.

if you get payment, but it takes time to clear, you can hold back the title, but the buyer should have insured the car thru their carrier before you let them drive home....this can be a bit touchy....the last time I did this, I let the buyer drive home on my tags, and he fedexed them back to me....but the best way to do it is to take a deposit, let the buyer come back with cash, or do a wire transfer, and he should come back with tags, or temp tags, but at least he should have insurance.

again, a lot of this is based on trust.

good luck.
