So after leaving Salt Lake on Thursday I flew to Denver where Avis rented me a Buick Rendezvous (not recommended). On Thursday I stopped at a Taco Bell in the Englewood area just off I-25, and pulling in to the lot I noticed a VW that was too big to be the Passat- it had to be the Phaeton. So I pull in to my spot next to a Bentley Continental GT- the one I've just been reading about in CAR magazine.
There were 3 Phaetons, 1 Continental GT, and 1 Toaureg, all with AZ plates on them. I hung around, took photos, waiting for the drivers to emerge from the Taco Bell, dying to know how these people got to drive these expensive fast VW group products which aren't even on sale yet in the US. Turns out they work for a proving grounds test track in Arizona, and VW was having these folks drive the vehicles to the AZ proving grounds from their headquarters somewhere in the NE or Midwest.
When the Bentley started up its engine to drive away, the sound coming from the exhaust was incredible- nearly automotive porn sounding. The Bentley is an incredible looking car in person. The Phaeton is imposing but not beautiful. I've got to figure out how to go to work for a test track like these people... it would be a dream job for me to get paid to drive nice cars across the country... especially if they were exclusive cars like the Continental GT or Phaeton.
I was amazed to see these not-yet-in-USA cars at a Taco Bell in Denver. I've got 2 photos, but nowhere to post them online.
Have a great weekend!
