It was the Chrysler Speedfest Sunday. I was #97's groupie. Let me explain. Paul Perry brought his 1967 Sonett to race (model 97 and car number 97) and I got a participant pass from him with a car pass to bring my car in the pits.
I got to ride from the pits to the pre-grid in his race car like I was somebody. Meanwhile the place is full of exotics, collectables, and classic that folks bring to race. Bugs and Alfas, McLarens, Porsches, Lotus. Spent some time talking to the fellow with the '59 Lotus 7 being towed by his 9-3. Got to start the Alpine in the pre-grid as Steve couldn't reach the key while belted, normally his wife does that. Fun being involved in the pace of one entrant instead of trying to absorb the whole thing.
If the race and the pits weren't enough there was the "Corral" out in the lot just behind the main grandstand where all the car clubs park. Miata, Z, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, Alfa, a gazillion nice cars. And if you were still board the Navy had a line of current warplanes and pilots to sit in and talk about. Chrysler, the sponsor, was there with a ride and drive with CrossFires, Pacificas and PTs and their usual display of ambitous show cars including a very production looking "300".
The 04 9-5 Aero in expresso black I brought got alot of attention including that of some folks who have an Aero and a Ferrari. Their Aero is an '03, their Ferrari is an '83 Mondial Coupe. The guys says his Aero has alot more power than his 3.0 V8 Ferrari!
A brand new black Enzo parked just behind us. Black with a red interior. I still can't believe the size of the ground effects tunnels on a street car!
On the way over I had to stop at the Alfa Club display at the "Festa" in little Italy our local Italian district. All kinds of Alfas and two Lamborghinis, a Diablo and a 3500 with 225,000+ miles.
Thanks again to Paul Perry owner of the #97 1967 Saab Sonett of the Swedish Auto Factory in Santa Clara for allowing me to be his groupie. He's very well prepared, doesn't need to fiddle with his car (it is a Saab after all) so there wasn't much to do. He did let me clean his wheels after one practice.
