(not that there's anything wrong with that). Hopefully this is a case of a customer dropping a vehicle off the night before a service date and the indie didn't know what the vehicle's contents were.
Can't see where liability for the loss would attach to the indy if the owner left his vehicle and contents outside your building, he should have excerised some degree of care. If the indie took the vehicle(s) into his locked building and the equipment was stolen after a break in, then probably the indie's insurance would cover it.
I have my auto and homeowners with the same carrier so that there is no arguement about coverage if some expensive personal property, such as a computer or golf clubs, gets stolen from my car. But I have to "declare" those items in advance to the insurer, not just call up and say they were just stolen. If the indie's customer did not have the atv declared with his insurer under either his auto or homeowner's policy, he is probably out of luck.
The atv owner should notify the manufacturer of the theft so that if the atv comes in for service, he can be notified.
