region, you most likely saw a lot of really old plants with some newer ones in between.
China is a big country, think of the industrial area in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania 30-40 years back... They put heavy industries near natural resources, such as coal and iron with good railroad link to other industrial centres. The part you visited was occupied in World War II due to natural resources and industrial significance.
Many in the west don't get to see what you saw in China. High finance folks get to see the big cities but not rural or industrial areas. Maybe you can constrast what you saw near the plant with what you found near Shanghai and Beijing.
No, your average worker can't afford a private car, but they do stride to get "luxury" items when they can.
