I've been trying to meet people through "speed dating" events. The problem with these events is that they are totally hit or miss. You may meet no one who likes to do the things you like to do. Also, I find that these are very first impression oriented. Personally, I've found that I like to meet poeple (male or female) over time. I've had poor first impressions of people, yet they turn out to be totally different than my impressions. I've had good first impressions of people, and they turn out to be back stabbing SOBs. In a club-type situation, at least you know the person likes to do one thing you do. Also, you get to see the real "them" over time, as they do you. For instance, I met my ex-countery western dancing partner in class. Had I met her at a speed dating event, I would've never selected her. However, I ended up asking her to take CW lessons with me. Over time, I realized what a truly wonderful person she was (who, unfortunately, had a boyfriend!).

Developing relationships through things/events/clubs that interest you allows you time to determine who really interests you at the same time as furthering your own interests in the club.

Having said all of that, this can be harder than it sounds. I'm a member of three clubs here in CT, yet I have not been to any of them! They tend to have no rides (mountain biking club) on the weekends, or have rides too far from where I live (racing biking club) or other problems. Nonetheless, this is my recommendation, and I'm sticking to it!
