Japanese cars are the preferred mode of transportation. The Proton Saga et al is a 'made-in-Malaysia' Mitsubishi, so some of it would be due to national pride. Choices of upmarket cars are basically Mercedes and BMWs.
In Singapore the tax structure and the fact that cars are only allowed on the road for 10 calendar years make most higher priced cars uneconomical. Even people who can afford a SAAB generally think twice and go for the cheaper option. Mainly Japanese cars on the road, a few Benzes, BMWs and Volvos, very few SAABs. Here, you pay for parking 24 hours a day, traffic cameras at every intersection, automatic radar cameras, etc, traffic zones (pay to pass - every car has a cashcard machine on the windscreen). I should know, I lived there for thirty years.
Thailand is better, except for the traffic jams. Quite a few SAABs on the road, mainly in Bangkok. Most of the cars are sold during the annual Bangkok motor show; not a lot of aggressive marketing here, as it's considered a niche car. Preferences are Japanese makes, mainly pickups. Benzes and BMWs are status symbols, Volvos and Saabs are preferred by the older generation. One advantage of being here, at least here you get to keep your car till it dies. Been here fifteen years now and love this place.:o))
P.S. lots of turbo'd pickups and modified Japanese cars, many specialist turbo shops here. Even if it is hot and humid.
