I have done this kind a haul with a friend of mine twice and can offer you a couple of tips;
First off find out from the owner why he is concerned. Hopefully it may only be tires, brakes, battery,bad starter etc.. If it is something easily taken care of work it out with the owner to get it fixed before you arrive. Bring loads of tools,any supplies you can think of, water, coolant and a tow strap. You may never know what you may run into. With any luck if you do break down you can get to next village and go from thier. Some extra parts may also be helpful,radator and vacuum hoses. Keep your driving to daytime hours- earlier the better. The last time I went to Chicago we picked up a good running VW and about 1 hour out of town the questionable muffler/tail pipe made its presence known. Getting it rigged up on the side of a busy hwy at night was a little scary. No need to drive 85, just take it easy and unless the car is determined to be dangerous or has a truly known problem that is detrimental to driving you should be okay and may even be have a fun adventure. Good luck!
