John Adams' "El Nino"

Another great holiday CD set is the newish John Adams opera, El Nino, from 2001, the international reviews of which put it at about the most highly reviewed new operatic piece in the last 15 or 20 years. It uses straight Biblical texts as well as a lot of the newly popular Gnostic Gospels (a la The DaVinci Code) to bring to life the myths surrounding the Virgin Birth and the young years of the Chirst child. The music has some knock you off your feet moments, in a way that only the best orchestral American music can, and whenever I listen to it I find myself ready to sing out rock style such odd lines as "King of All Kings!" or "I will shake the heavens!" If you're at all curious about American contemporary orchestral choral music this is a great and complex piece.
