They found that there was no unusual wear on the tires, or any additional noise when running them backwards. The only difference they noticed was that traction wasn't quite as good when they were run backwards. They concluded that the only reason some tires are directional is so that the manufacturer can optimize traction. But, if you can convince Discount Tire to give you a new set, there's no harm in that.
