Hey guys,
This week my car is going in to get a new block installed since my 90 SPG's main seals went out. I called my mechanic up and he had diagnosed the problem, basically over the phone. I don't know about you guys, but when my car is down, almost every minute without it, is thinking about how to get it back up ASAP. Well, he thinks just the same way that I do too, every job is just as personal to him. It's not like one of those guys who will take you in whenever he finds the freest of free time. He will rearrange his own schedule to take your car in. We have been in contact over the phone almost every day for the past 5 days discussing about which seals, gaskets, etc to buy from a cheap source (he has access to new parts, but he says if you can find them cheaper, go there). I told him my price range for this job, and let me tell you, what I have, is LOW. He said he would do everything he could to keep the price within this range to help me out. He's selling me the engine block that's going in the car for a very cheap price, every time we need a new seal/gasket that he forgot, he lowers the already low price of the block. So, yesterday it was finally the day to drop off the car at his house. I get there with my 2.1 liter cylinder head and intake manifold, all the seals, case of oil, coolant, etc, he's in his garage with the new engine block touching it up. It has a professionally quality paint finish on the block, looks beautiful. He told me he just got done painting it himself, with some high temp paint that helps disappate heat faster - "and makes it look cooler", as well as polishing up the parts of the block that you will be able to see in the engine bay, all for no extra cost, and he didn't even tell me he was going to do it! He literally hand polished some parts on the block to a mirror finish. I was shocked. I have been using this guy for over a year now, and every single time his work, price, and quickness have been A+++. I seriously don't know if you could find a better mechanic out there. His labor rates are lower than any indy shop around, he gets work done very quickly, as soon as you need him. My car blew it's turbo last year, he took off the old one and installed the new turbo within one day of notice, and that's not even uncommon for him. And his work is top notch, nothing ever fails after he's doing fixing it. It's always nice and clean work too, no loose ends or things left for you to fix. Just like the example of him hand polishing my engine block, he takes serious pride in the work. He is always concerned about doing the job correctly, and how not to find away around something. He's a great guy to talk to as well, I would definatly consider him my friend. He mainly does c900 work, and he is located in Denver, PA (near Ephrata). His Dad own's Stauffer Auto Body, where he (my mechanic) also works during the day time, so he's able to do body work too, which he did for me as well. His quality work on my airflow kit really shows, great prices on the body work too. So he works at his Dad's shop in the day time and then he works out of his personal shop for mechanical car repairs after hours, where his work really shines. His body work is exceptional, but his mechanical ability is perfect. I'm not getting paid to advertise for him or anything, I just thought someone else can benefit from his awesome work and excellent rates.
Here is his contact information;
Don Stauffer junior (his Dad is Don senior if you call the auto body place)
Phone #: 717-336-3191 (his Dad's shop)
717-336-6331 (his house)
Give this guy a call, you will NOT be displeased. He loves taking in new work, so don't feel hesitant.
Still can't believe he spent some hours of his own time making that engine block looking pretty, without even asking, knowing I am on a very tight budget (so the price can't go up) ... all I can still think is, wow.
Really glad to see there are mechanics out there like him,
Taylor
