Hi : No long-term experience, but my wife and I seriously looked at buying a new Protege5 (among other small wagons) nearly a year ago. We ended up, happily, with up a slightly used '01 9-3SE instead, but here's my take.

- nice interior for an economy car
- good handling in low speed around town, or curvy rural road situations. Probably a better autoX car than a 9-3, but lacks the Saab's high speed stability.
- noisy, in a droning way, at freeway speeds even compared to our 9-3, which is not exactly a quiet car.
- Lacks luggage space with rear seat up. There is not enough room for our 2 good size dogs whereas they fit fine in our 9-3 hatch.
- Cramped driving position. Even with the seat all the way back, I couldn't get comfortable (6'3", 190lb, long legs).
- fuel economy is no better, perhaps worse, than our 9-3SE (unless I flog the 9-3). This based on EPA and on friends that have a PR5.
- good seats, front and rear, but don't compare to the 9-3.
- probably will be a mechanically reliable car in the long run.

Our conclusion was that a slightly used 9-3 hatch was much more practical, had more 'amenities', was safer, faster when needed, more comfortable, etc.. And a used 9-3 could be had with the same duration of warrantee as a new PR5 for only a few thousand CDN$ more.
