I compared both before I settled on a 96 9000 CSE to replace my C900.
Both NG900/9-3 and 9000s have some trouble spots, but if you buy a good used 9000 some of the usual things are likely to have been done. That's probably true on the NG900 or 9-3 as well.
I love the interior size, the quiet ride, the power, and stability of the car on ANY road in any conditions. It holds a ton of stuff, too. My wife's car is an Explorer we had been using as the family car, but now we use the 9000, which is great for 2 adults and 2 kids (15 and 10). Even on errands the kids want to go in the Saab.
It is an amazing long-road car--just eats up the miles and the seats are superb front and rear. IMHO, the fit and finish is a bit better than the NG900/9-3 and the overall build quality seems a bit higher. Various friends have both NG900 and 9-3s.
My old C900 is destined for the 15 yr old as she starts driving next year, but I'm going to look for a good LPT 9000 for her.
I'd recommend a FPT 9000 from 96-98 as a VW replacement in a heartbeat. Have had lots of VWs and the Saab is simply in another league altogether.
Take your time to find a good one that has been well maintained, though. There is a HUGE difference between a 9000 that has been cared for and one that hasn't. Drive a bunch of them.

Good luck and have fun,
Noel
