The story of the movie is based on the real life of Takamori Saigo(see the site below), who was one of the founders of the modern Japan in the beginning of the Meiji Era. He was later disappointed by the new governmnet and went back to his home province Kagoshima. Then he started a civil war against the government (which is called 'Battle of the Southwest', and in the end killed himself when defeat was certain.
Because of his humaine personality he is still now respected and loved by the Japanese. His statue in Ueo Park in Tokyo is one of the most popular sights.
The movie is much the same as his life, except that in the movie there is an American involved.
As a Japanese I greatly enjoyed the movie because it was interesting to see good old Japanese virtues, which are almost completely disrecarded by the Japanese themselves, so beautifully described by the Americans.
