I've been coveting one of the new iPods since November. I've never owned an mp3 player and don't know much about digital music. After researching the iPod and its competitors, I can see why Apple is selling the iPod Mini at its current price point. In fact, it seems like a pretty smart strategy when comparison shopping.
From my understanding, mp3 players fall into two storage categories: flash memory and hard drives. I believe the iPod Mini competes against these devices because of its smaller size. Mp3 players in that size range and price point hold between 256mb and 1.5gb of memory--as of my comparison shopping experience during November. Given the iPod Mini's 4gb storage, smaller size, ease of use, and form factor, I think it's a great product in its category. A major competitor would be the Rio Nitrus (1.5gb storage for $299). Just based on design, I'd take the ipod Mini in a heartbeat compared to any of its competitors.
