I run an ISP and we provide such a service inhouse based on Venturi. It speeds things up by several methods and most customers who try it, keep it.
There are other reseller based systems, but we are actually providing a service, not reselling, and we can test and tweek it ourselves.
The most visible is that you have different levels of image quality. You can make an image 10x smaller in file size by reducing the number of colors and taking away a little crispness. If you're trying to speed up porn surfing or file downloading, this probably isn't the best choice. If you just like to surf around and read news/weather and do ebay and TSN, this can indeed provide a HUGE speed boost.
5x is real. I've timed it by loading a page, clearing the cache, quitting the browser, turning on the accelerator, starting the browser and visiting the site again. It also uses lossless compression to compress text data by several times. It also uses UDP with packet loss backoff algorithms between the compression server and the customer, for better response than TCP packets.
Saab used Venturi for better speed over their dealer satellite data intranet, but that was a substantially older and inferior version of Venturi compared to what is available now for internet acceleration. Venturi is also used by Verizon wireless internet capable cell phones to provide good speed over a lowly cell phone connection.
