That's too bad to hear that is does indeed sound like the car's life is definitely over...though it may live on in other cars. Realistically speaking, it is a 25 year old daily driver car, so I suppose it is expected to "give up the ghost" as they say at some point, unless you were to sink substantial money into it. I think I've heard the average expected lifetime of a car is 12 years, so your car had a very long life. It would be nice, though unlikely, if someone restored it...let us know if you hear any such news from your mechanic.
Anyway, at least you're getting a great "new" Saab, even if though it will never be the same as your first one. I drove an 89 900S 3-d hatchback for many years as my first car and loved it (and its the car that hooked me on Saabs), so it should be a very suitable replacement. It was still running almost as new at 170K plus miles when my sister totaled it (which didn't take much of an accident with the low blue book value of the classic 900s these days, just a little front end damage, no injuries at all to anyone involved) a little over a year ago. So, I feel your pain of losing your first Saab, but who knows, you may grow to enjoy your new one just as much, if in different ways...
