A surprising number of cars make it to the yards with intact airbags. Side impacts, sideswipes, minor frontals, overrides, underrides, rear impacts and rollovers do not deploy most airbags. Although it seems that some cars are totaled just because of the airbag deployment in minor impacts that raise the costs of repair.
Remember, the airbags are to be used in conjunction with seat belts. The worst cases I see are right front passengers who don't wear the belts and thrown to the dash by panic braking before the airbags go off. This is especially bad for children whose feet don't reach the floor to brace themselves.
