Blasted Hackers!!!.....

My home PC was invaded this week by a rogue program which kept changing the browser home page, installing useless icons on the desktop, inserting porn sites into the "trusted sites" folder of I-E. Multiple scans by McAfee Virus Scan and Ad-Aware could not eliminate it, although they would find registering editing spy-ware and a Trojan Horse.
I finally got rid of the problem (keeping my fingers crossed) by using System Restore and resetting my system to a date earlier than the invasion. Assuming this will happen some time again (stupid malicious hackers) what is the best method to clear my system? What did I fail to do or examine while trying to locate and destroy this rogue program?
BTW - I thought I was adequately protected from this crap. LinkSys router running as a hardware firewall, continuously updated virus scan software, McAfee's software firewall, frequent use of Ad-Aware, and Medium Security setting for I-E. Running WinXP Home.
Thanks in advance.
