What you're describing sounds like a problem with the pressure plate. As the clutch wears the fingers that actuate it from the throwout bearing bend and distort and over-center, sticking the pedal down. Basically it means the pressure plate wore out first, but likely the clutch disc is down to the rivets too.
Modern clutches don't always slip when they wear out. You'd notice slipping in high gear, not in lower gears, at the torque peak, going up a freeway speed hill for example, stab the clutch pedal to momentarily release, let the engine rev a bit and see if the re-engagement is mushy.
I'm fairly certain a Corolla clutch is hydraulic
