Don't know about actuary work, but I'm a EE and now doing project management and consulting with some systems engineering thrown into the mix. Very few EE's I know are the hardcore circuits and chip makers. A lot of us got into the software side of the business, and I got into the business side of the software biz. I end up dealing with project quotation, labor estimates, keeping to project gross margins, customer interaction, customer entertainment, travel, design approvals, coaching other engineers. All in all, I get a little technical, a lot of commercial experience, dollars and cents number crunching, risk mitigation, and a good bit of fun. The bonus (some might think) is that my career path has put me in the car business. I put systems in auto plants.
My point? EE is not a clear cut career path. There are many avenues, and once you're into a career, there should be some options that open up as you gain experience. Hell, I may be in sales in a year or 2. Who woulda thunk it!?!
