dumb question about water pump

A couple of months ago, I discovered a coolant leak somewhere in my 96 900 SE. The leak is slow: once a month, the computer says "coolant low", the engine never gets warm, I add a little coolant and keep driving.
Now, the car is in the shop for another reason (oxygen sensor...), and the mechanic tells me that they discovered a leak in the water pump and want to replace it.
So, here is the dumb question. Why can't I just keep adding a buck worth of coolant every few weeks, instead of coughing up $400 for the new pump?
Thanks,
Alex
