My wife and I did this in 1996 to pick up our 9000 CS. Sweden is wonderful, and driving there is a pleasure - great roads, good signage, and local maps available everywhere.

The one caveat is the expense. Everything is expensive - gas, food, wine, hotels - but overall the trip was worth it to us. We toured the west coast one day (Lysekil). Drove to Stolkhom and spent 3 days - a wonderful city. We drove down the east coast and stayed on the island of Orland, and finished the trip by driving back to Gothenberg.

I don't know about the timeing of your trade-in, we didn't do that. I do recall that it took about 8 weeks for the car to be shipped back to us.
