Saab only sold about 1700 cars last year in the whole country. Concentrating limited sales in fewer dealerships makes sense. Dealers who sell just a handful of cars don't view them as important to the dealership's business. That has negative implications for the level of support and service customers can expect.
Personally I'm worried about Saab's future. Its global sales in 03 were up 9% and US sales were up 27%. Since it sold 35% of its cars in the US it's easy enough to figure out that sales in the rest of the world went nowhere. Even in the US its sales record only beat the old one from 1986 by 1%.
It was no great trick to do better the year it revamped one of its two models. The acid test will be 04 sales. If they stall at or below 03 levels I really wonder what Saab's future is. According to GM its breakeven is around 225000 but it only sold 131000 on 03. GM quit talking publicly about sales targets for Saab last year but they were hoping for something around 180000. The Subaru/9-2 and Blazer/9-7 will give dealers something else to sell but these are desperation moves. If Saab can't make money selling Saabs it's toast. So far this year US sales are down 29%.
