Believe it when you see it, but GM has totally shattered the concept of What Comes Where. Korean Chevies, American and Japanese Saabs. On one hand, re: Opel, why import cars made in high-cost Europe (high Euro, work rules and benefits more suitable for a CEO than a blue collar guy) when Vectra platform cars are already made here? OTOH, the last thousand cars a month out a factory cost zip, and a simply rebadged Opel might cost less than a new variant made-in-USA. Or Mexico. With Saab leading the way with USA emission standards, they might need little more than a MPH speedometer to pass muster at the border.
As for an *even smaller* (9-3 based) Cadillac, the Trollhattan factory is very flexible, building 9-3s and 9-5s on the same line, with SportWagons coming soon. It's also set up for small-batch processing, with quick-change dies and a work flow based on producing sheet metal parts in 1000 piece lots. An insider (who would know) has told me that the Trollhattan plant is world-class in terms of cost and quality.
