Notably absent from the M1 5W40 is the Phosphorous content - but it can be inferred from the zinc, since phosphorous is only there as zinc di-something-phosphate, the most effective anti-wear additive known. Most diesel oils run about .12% phosphorous (1200 ppm), just like Delvac 5W40. But phosphorous is known to do a number on catalytic converters, and manufacturers whose engines use some oil have convinced ILSAC to keep on lowering the zinc level. GF-3 limit is .8%, I think, and GF-4 (coming to an oil can near you this summer) drops that further to .6%. That's why you see 0W40 with .8% and 15W50 being north of 1% - 15W50 is too thick to be an ILSAC GF grade.
All good stuff.
