Well, over a month and a half later we finally got our Saab (97 900SET 5-d) back and it's great to be back behind the wheel of a Saab again. See the link below for a refresher why it went into the shop in the first place (A Hit & Run while parked).
Initial thoughts--very happy just to have the car back at all...and even happier that it seems to be running/handling great, possibly better than ever, but we'll have to wait til this weekend to really test it out as I just started a new busy job.
Why so long? Well, some decisions were made by the insurance company that prolonged things (for example, they requested a wheel be sent out to be repaired that ended up having to be completely replaced--not surprising at all given how bad it looked but...), so we had to wait on the parts for that, other parts ordering delays, and then when it was all put back together, the check engine light went on first the heater core, then the O2 sensor. So, quite an ordeal, incredibly tough wait, but at least we didn't need the Saab for a daily commute...and we have a very good "other" car...so we managed to survive without the Saab as frustrating as it was to wait.
The Hit & Runner...nope, as usual, they were not caught. We actually did get a call from someone who llived in an apartment right over where the accident occurred, who heard the accident and even saw people getting out of the hitter's car into a neighboring building, but alas, it was night and they couldn't read the license plate, so nothing came of it. It's a shame, almost more about the principal of it than the $, and not the first time I've had some info on a hit & runner, but they've slipped away, but whatever, you've got to move on as it has been suggested. So, we did have to pay the $500 deductible...but just under $5,000 (!) worth of work was done, so if everything is as good as it seems so far (knock on wood), we should consider ourselves relatively lucky (in the aftermath, not the fact that it happened intially of course), it could have been worse I suppose. But we will see...
Mechanically? Most of the repair cost was of course front suspension--mostly on the left side--(from a sub frame to the wheels and nearly everything in between) and as I mentioned so far so good, but I havn't fully pushed the car yet or laid underneath the car (what to look for under there?). Any ideas of what to look out for? Of course I'll be looking out for feel, pulling to the side, noises, uneven tire wear...what else and any specific suggestions of how best to evaluate the condition? Although no complaints so far in high traffic, city driving up to 35mph for about 5 miles yesterday.
Anyway, I'll stop there for now, it's great to be back in our Saab--thanks to everyone for their past & future help.
