...minor biking in the area, and man, it's tough on the body! It's alot of hills and valleys. You can stay in the valleys, but the best roads are probably through the hills so you can overlook the hundreds of grape orchards and lavendar fields that fill the land. I'm no avid biker like you and your wife, so I'm sure you can make some trips easier than me (quite out of shape as we speak - but the land is forcing me to get back in shape). There are plenty of Tour de France bikers practicing all across the region here in large packs as well as many locals who take biking seriously here. They'll pass you faster than a car will! Some of my friends are very good at competitive bicycling and they love these roads here. I know a student at my school apparently bicycled well over a thousand miles here and had an amazing time doing it.
But yes, the scenery is absolutely amazing. It can't be put into words. Even the pictures that I've taken (hundreds in just the first week I've been here) can't capture the atmosphere you will encounter. You will just have to wait and see, you won't be disappointed. A town you should definatly visit is Lacoste. Quite a biased opinion from me, but it's not far from Nice. It's a medevil village on a hillside that overlooks a giant valley. It is a forgotten world here. Come and discover it before it becomes common knowledge to the rest of the world. It is a very small rural village that houses very simple people. If you are from here, please do not take that as anything except a compliment. It is rumored Sandra Bullock, John Malkovich, Demi Moore, and some other American celebrities have homes here, but that will be the last thing on your mind. I arrived here about a week ago and I'll be here for another 7 weeks for one college semester , thanks to my college in Savannah, GA (Savannah College of Art and Design) - who adopted this town as a satellite campus, which only holds about 50 students per semester. The Pont Du Gard is a must see in the area, and not far from where you will be. I just saw it about 3 days ago. You will need to sample the Rosie wine, which is made from the grapes grown here in Provence. As I finish the email, I'm looking out a window across the beautiful valley, the sky is blue, the fields of lavendar are in the first stages of bloom, the fields are green, everything is perfect. You will not regret this trip. It fills you with awe.
Some other places I have visited so far are Apt, which holds the longest running open air market in the world, every Saturday from 9AM-12noon, the colors, smells, textures, and people are surreal here, definatly worth checking out. It is like being inside a Van Gogh painting. Speaking of Van Gogh, you can travel to St.Remee (spelling?) which is the town he spent his most famous years in. Where he painted Starry Night and where he stayed for a while in the mental institution. Both of these towns are within the Provence area, if you can get to them within an hour by car easily.
Feel free to email me or post with anymore questions, and I'll do my best to help you out with the information that I know so far and have available to me.
Take care!
Taylor
(ps - sorry for any typos, gotta get back outside and enjoy the day!)
