I think it depends on what you need to do.
There are a bunch of cases that work well. Places like eBags.com and a few others have tons of choices.
If you do a lot of air travel it might change the equation for you. After years of different briefcase-style bags I went to a backpack. It is far easier than anything else IMHO. There are a lot of choices. I have an Ogio Metro which is serving me well. I like the Swiss Army line right now. They have some nice, if overpriced, satchels.
Be sure whatever bag you choose will actually fit your notebook and is amply padded. Ones that either have a lot of padding on the bottom or that suspend your computer seem best. You will invariably drop the bag at some point and need the protection.
Don't forget the bag is also a briefcase, so be sure it has room for you usual array of stuff--snackage, phone, files, etc, etc. If you buy it in a store, try to go in with your usual satchel and test load a bag you are considering. Make sure it will stand up when loaded and open. Not all will.
And unless you have to look seriously corporate, get a sholder strap (unless you are going the backpack route). Makes life easier, especially if you travel much.
