If you aren't running XP and can't do the automatic resizing here's one way to do it in Photshop.
The Nikon Coolpix in Fine mode records the image at 72 dpi but gives you an image that's about 24 x 18 inches and is 5.4 to 7.2 MB. Big file!
Open the photo in Photoshop. The Lite version you have is fine.
Under the Image menu go to Image Size.
Resize it by changing the dimensions in inches to 3 x 5, 4 x 6 or whatever. As you will see in the dialog box, it will also reduce the number of pixels used and the size in megabytes. (You can also use pixels and milimeters for sizing if you prefer)
For printing, don't worry about the image being recorded at 72 dpi. When you print from the full-size image the software automatically takes care of the conversion to a print format, which requires a higher resolution. Just don't reduce an image to say, 4 x 6 for emailing and then expect to be able to print an 8 x 10 and have it be a sharp picture.
