Before we got married, my fiancee was advised to encourage my interest in toys. I think she took it to heart. I've aquired more fly rods than is reasonable, received a Billy Pate reel from her as a wedding present, bought a family sailboat, was encouraged to upgrade my '87 9K to a '95 when an excellent opportunity presented itself, and have been encouraged to pursue my interests. When the time came to replace her Mazda, she chose a '95Aero, and loves it!

Rather than being jealous of my attention to cars, fish, and sailing, my wife has encouraged those things that make me happy. It is who I am.

I don't shirk attention to her, though these things do take time from being together. I think we are both confident enough in ourselves and each other to enjoy our time together and apart. I think it is important to have independant interests and space. Kahlil Gibran, writing in "The Prophet", says that a man and wife grow healthy not as a vine intertwined, but as two trees. They grow near each other, but not so close as to block the sun from each other or take each other's nutrients. That way they both grow strong and healthy. I think there is some wisdom there.

Some of my fishing buddies have wives who are truly anxious, and sometimes angry when their husbands head off on a long weekend trip. Life has no guarantees, and it would seem beneficial to me for those wives to develop the strengths to manage on their own. Long weekends will go faster and be more fun, and should tragedy strike they'll be better prepared to handle life on their own.

Besides, you may find that you really LIKE dogs, or Saabs....
