Adam,
The stator is a weak point on a number of older Suzuki motorcycles. However, the wise thing to do is to replace the battery anyway if you don't know its history or it is older. Go with one of the new sealed or gel units available from Batteryweb.com or Batterymart.com. Most lead-acid motorcycle batteries have a very high rate of discharge as compared with a car. These higher-tech batteries have a much longer life, a lower discharge rate, and a faster recharge rate. Also, hook the new battery up to a battery maintainer such as a Deltran Battery Tender when the bike isn't being used. Don't use a trickle charger.....it'll cook the battery. If you want to check the charging of the battery, start the bike and hook up a multi-tester voltmeter to the battery. A healthy bike battery should be around 12.6-12.8 volts prior to starting, rising to about 13.8-14.0 when running at about 3000 rpm in neutral.
