There was a signifigant amount of paint splattered on the floor before I sanded it down. Although there was very light staining underneath the paint, it disappeared immediately after I sanded. I was not so fortunate with mold stains, from previous owners dog/cat?
Stain penetrates the wood at least 1/8 of an inch. If you decide you don't like the pattern, paint would be much much easier to undo.
Would suggest you also look into using a oil-based finish. Polyurethane (generally water-based) will not mellow in color with age. Oil Based finish devolops a wonderful gold color with time - this hides imperfections in the wood.
