You're doing something wrong Posted by Saabpilot [Email] (#134) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saabpilot) on Sat, 8 May 2004 04:07:31 In Reply to: What's wrong with state of ohio & me?, Seung Min Yu (Mel), Fri, 7 May 2004 20:03:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I live here in Columbus and regularly drive those stretches of road you mentioned at, uhh, lets just say high rates of speed. In Ohio the police are required to be out in the open when they run speed traps. The key is 1) buy a good radar detector - if you think it's too expensive just realize you've practically paid for it already with your tickets, and 2) look ahead of you and constantly scan for police cars. Too many people are fixated on the 50 feet right in front of their car. And don't drive too erraticly. Contrary to urban myth people in Ohio and especially in Columbus do drive very fast. Take it from one who has regularly traveled Ohio and Michigan for many years. Rush hour here is just like rush hour in Detroit except people here drive WORSE. In fact I have traveled nearly every major metropolitan area in this country over the past 15 years and I can honestly say, speaking as a displaced east-coaster by the way, that Columbus has the worst drivers in the country. It's a mixture of country bumpkins who drive 45 everywhere and don't know the left lane is for PASSING, hormone laden idiotic kids cutting in and out of traffic, psycho motorcycle drivers standing up and popping wheelies at 85 MPH, a-hole businessmen who think their Jag/Mercedes/BMW gives them a license to do whatever they want, people who don't understand that flicking that little turn signal lever on the left side of the steering wheel won't give them carpal tunnel and therefore they never use it (my personal pet peeve) and just plain 'ol speed demons, and a few who actually obey the speed limits. Another piece of advice that I use personally is NEVER speed through neighborhoods or anywhere the posted speed limit is 45 or less. You are more apt to get caught and / or to hurt someone. Of course I realize speeding is wrong but I'm always in a hurry. And as a former young guy whose younger girlfriend went to college one state away, yes, I understand your motiviation for wanting to get to see her as quickly as possible but you won't pop by being a little later and she'll still be there.
Give me a wave if you see me around town - 1987 900 turbo convertible, edwardian grey with an aero kit and Super Inca wheels - only one like it in Columbus and frequently out and about on the north side where you are driving.
