As an appreciator of fine classic cars, "Pimp My Ride" bothers me. It's all about image and nothing about the car. There is so little creativity on the show.
Dumb girl or Dump boy wants their limping car turned into a gimmick by the rapper on someone elses' dime. It's a makeover story reworked to include cars instead of prom dresses and hairstyling.
Making a car personal and special and doing the job right takes more than a week and wheelbarrow of cash. First is takes creativity from the owner AND the people doing the work, not just one party. Second it takes time. Done yourself, it may takes years. Done by someone else, it may take months of thorough work to do quality craftmanship to get it right. I'm guessing most of the cars at West Coast Customs spend at least a few weeks there, unlike the one on the show where it seems like days, making it just good enough for the TV cameras. Half the stuff they do to the cars are useless fads that will date themselves quickly.
After all that bashing though, it is nice to see the participant go from being car ambivolent to car enthusiast.
