I spent most of my High School years cutting 5 acres of grass. First with a walk-behind push, then my Dad bought a small Simplicity riding mower. Yeah, I have a T-shirt which reads the Lawn Ranger. My house has a 1/6 acre lot and I am happy it is no larger - cut it twice a week.
A half acre is a lot of walking, either push or self-propelled, when only cutting 20 inches at a time. My recommendation is attached - provides exercise and wide cutting width!
Will you have snow too? Although your lawn might be small to justify a riding mower, if you will have a long driveway with heavy snow you may want a riding tractor anyway to help with snow removal.
