9-2X headed for Europe

Saab will introduce an entry-level 9-2 into Europe, reports Automotive News, but it will be an all-new, next-generation model in a few years time rather than a version of the Subaru Impreza-based 9-2X which is about to go on sale in the USA (pictured). CEO Peter Augustsson, speaking at the launch of the 9-2X, said that European dealers were asking for a car to compete with the Volvo S40, Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class - and presumably, the upcoming BMW 1-Series as well. He said that such a model would arrive within the next few years.
Saab is also awaiting approval from parent company GM to develop its 'own' seven-seater 4x4-luxury crossover vehicle, which would be built on the same Lambda platform as an upcoming Saturn model. A replacement for the current, ageing 9-5 saloon/estate range is still a long way off, but a mid-cycle facelift will come in the next few years; however, a project for a jointly-developed top-end luxury car in collaboration with Cadillac and GM partners Alfa Romeo is said to have been shelved. Bringing a two-seater sports car - a successor to the Sonnett of the late 1960s/early '70s - into production is feasible, as this would be built on the rear-wheel drive Kappa platform which will underpin the Pontiac Solstice, replacement Opel Speedster/Vauxhall VX220 and possible Chevrolet and Saturn models, but insiders hint that renewing the product line-up in Saab's core market sectors and aiming at volume segments is more of a priority in the short term.
