"synchromesh" Check the dictionary... Posted by PGAero [Email] (#1143) [Profile/Gallery] (more from PGAero) on Tue, 18 May 2004 15:40:34 In Reply to: It is 'synchronizer' no meshes. n/m, BobD, Tue, 18 May 2004 15:22:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Synchro has become the shortened way to refer to a sychromesh mechanism in a manual tranny. It has roots in the "synchro" word. i.e. "synchronization" of the two spinning gears.
They are simply rings that pass through eachother when a gear is engaged, before the teeth meet. They are very much like a clutch/clutch plate interaction...everytime you engage a gear without matching revs, the two rings touch, slip, and match speed. You can feel a good double clutch because there is very little effort required to engage the gear because the synchros have no job to do, and they don't experience any wear.
