Hi,
A lot of the apartments in downtown Austin are brand new, loft-style apartments, and I'm not sure about how much they rent for, but $1000 for a 1 bedroom is probably close to it, plus parking fees maybe?
Close to downtown, but not within walking distance of sixth street, there are lots of apartments about a mile and a half west of the capitol that rent for anywhere between 550 and 750/mo for a 1 bedroom, parking spot included.
South of the river/Town lake, there are quite a few older complexes that rent for about the same price, and some newer ones that rent for more.

I think the price you pay depends on how fancy/new you want, the newer it is the nicer it will be...
I like the idea of living downtown, especially if you work down there. Rush hour traffic isn't horrible, but I wouldn't necessarily want to commute very far.
