We have this canoe...it floats, and it was free. It also looks like hell. Once upon a time (like thirty years ago) it had been red. After many years of use and many winters of outdoor storage, it's now pitted, scratched, gouged, and badly faded. This doesn't bother me particularly (it floats, right?) but it seems to offend my husband (I guess he's not crazy about having a pink canoe). So, we've decided to repair it, repaint it, and generally bring it back to life. Because we are Saab-obsessed freaks, we are going to make this sad old canoe into a sort of Saab. :o)
First, we'll patch up the gouges, then restore the paint to a nice, deep red--to match my Saab and his Volvo.
We plan to mount hood/rear emblems on the front and back ends (but help me: the new style or the old Saab-Scania style?). We'll also stencil the "SAAB" logo alongside.
We'll clean up all the rusty metal and repaint it black.
I'd like to find one of those metal emblems--NOT the vinyl decals--that has the "S" and the small Swedish flag on it. But every site I found while searching on line earlier has decals only. Can anyone tell me what those emblems are called, and where I might obtain one?
Currently we have no plans for the interior, although if anyone has suggestions, I'm happy to hear them. It's your basic two-seater canoe.
I'll be taking before, during, and after photos, and will eventually find a way to post them on line.
I keep calling this project "Monster Canoe" which makes me laugh every time I think it, although my husband points out that we are not really keeping in the spirit of Monster Garage, since we are merely refurbishing the canoe and not turning it into a nuclear submarine or whatever. We'll probably spend the summer accumulating supplies and ideas, and begin the restoration project in the fall.
